Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers among women globally, and in India it accounts for nearly 14% of all female cancers. The encouraging truth is that when detected early — at Stage I or II — the 5-year survival rate exceeds 90%. This is why awareness of early warning signs is life-saving knowledge.
1. A New Lump or Mass
The most common symptom is a painless lump in the breast or underarm. Not all lumps are cancerous, but any new or changed lump should be evaluated promptly by a specialist.
2. Changes in Breast Size or Shape
Any unexplained change in the size, contour, or shape of one breast should raise concern. Asymmetry that develops suddenly is worth investigating.
3. Skin Changes
Look for dimpling, puckering, redness, or skin that resembles an orange peel (peau d'orange). These can signal inflammatory breast cancer, which spreads rapidly.
4. Nipple Changes
Nipple inversion (turning inward), unusual discharge (especially bloody), or flaking/peeling skin around the nipple are important symptoms.
5. Unexplained Breast Pain
While most breast pain is non-cancerous, persistent or localised pain that does not resolve with your menstrual cycle should be evaluated.
6. Swollen Lymph Nodes
A swelling or lump in the armpit or near the collarbone may indicate that cancer has spread to the lymphatic system.
7. Skin Ulceration or Rash
Advanced breast cancer can cause ulceration of the overlying skin. A persistent rash on the breast, particularly with warmth, may indicate inflammatory breast cancer.
When to See a Doctor
Do not wait for multiple symptoms. If you notice even one of these changes, consult a surgical oncologist immediately. Early assessment is always the correct course of action.
